Ease Fear & Anxiety At The Dentist With Sedation

Ease Fear & Anxiety At The Dentist With Sedation

Whether you have serious dental anxiety or you’re just nervous about an upcoming dental procedure like a tooth extraction, sedation dentistry from Advanced Dentistry of Mount Pleasant can help. We offer relaxing nitrous oxide sedation that helps you feel more calm and comfortable throughout your appointment.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the practice of using sedative drugs to help patients feel more comfortable throughout their dental appointments. It has a long history, as dentists first experimented with sedation during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Today, there are lots of different options for sedation dentistry. At our office, we offer nitrous oxide, which helps you feel relaxed throughout your procedure, but doesn’t have the long-lasting after-effects of other common sedation methods.

Options For Anxious Patients At Advanced Dentistry of Mount Pleasant – Nitrous Oxide

At Advanced Dentistry of Mount Pleasant, we offer nitrous oxide sedation to all of our patients. This treatment involves no pills or needles. You’ll just wear a comfortable nose mask, which will send a stream of nitrous oxide and oxygen into your lungs.

As you breathe the gas, you’ll feel more comfortable, and you’ll feel your anxiety melt away. You’ll be able to relax throughout your entire procedure. Once your appointment is over, Dr. Candice Vinson will adjust the mask to send pure oxygen into your lungs. This helps clear away any nitrous oxide that remains in your bloodstream, so the effects of your sedation will wear off rapidly.

You’ll feel normal after about 5 minutes, and while you may experience some after-effects like a headache, nausea, or dizziness, these are usually very minor and go away quickly. Unlike other methods of sedation, this means you can drive to and from our office if you opt for nitrous oxide sedation.

Will I Feel Any Pain With Sedation?

No. Laughing gas sedation helps reduce any sensations of pain, and your treatment area will also be numbed using numbing spray and numbing injections to keep you comfortable during your appointment at Advanced Dentistry of Mount Pleasant.

This means you’ll feel completely safe and comfortable during your treatment, and won’t feel any pain or discomfort.

How Do I Prepare To Be Sedated?

You don’t have to do anything special to prepare to be sedated with nitrous oxide. However, we do recommend you avoid eating or drinking for 1-2 hours before your appointment. This can help reduce the risk of nausea and vomiting after your sedation with nitrous oxide wears off.

Beyond that, there are no other special steps that you’ll need to take. You can drive yourself home after your appointment, or even go back to work after your procedure, since nitrous oxide wears off within a few minutes.
