How Long Does it Take to Get a Dental Implant? A Timeline

Start to Finish in 3-6 Months

From start to finish, implant treatment can take anywhere between 3-6 months. At Advanced Dentistry of Mount Pleasant, we understand that implant treatment is an investment of your time. We pride ourselves on our communicative approach, and we want to give every implant patient an accurate idea of what to expect during treatment. Here is everything you need to know about the implant treatment timeline:

Step 1: Treatment Planning

Once you are approved for dental implant treatment, Dr. Vinson will begin planning your procedure. During this visit, she will take images, scans, and impressions of your teeth. This helps our team determine precisely where to surgically insert your implant, and give us detailed information about the structure of your jaw. Once the images and scans are taken, it takes about 1-2 weeks to develop your personalized treatment plan. Once your plan is complete, you’ll return to our office for your implant placement appointment.

Step 2: Implant Placement

Once every detail of your treatment has been planned, Dr. Vinson will schedule your implant placement procedure. For a single implant, this appointment will last about an hour. During the procedure, Dr. Vinson will make an incision in your gum line, then insert your implant into this area. Next, she will suture the area shut. Before you leave this appointment, Dr. Vinson will give you detailed instructions to care for your implant as your gums heal.

Step 3: Healing & Osseointegration

The healing and osseiontegration process is the part of implant treatment that takes the longest. Depending on your oral health, this process can take anywhere between 3-6 months. This is because the titanium implant must fuse with your jaw to essentially become a part of your bone. Through the process of sseiontegration, your implant becomes an artificial tooth root that will eventually be strong enough to support a restoration like a crown or implant-supported denture.

Step 4: Implant Restoration

While your implant heals, Dr. Vinson will take more scans and images of your mouth in order to create your custom restoration. After your implant is fully osseointegrated, the restoration will be attached to restore the function and beauty of your smile.
