Traveling With Dentures? What to Pack Before You Go

Traveling With Dentures? What to Pack Before You Go

If you’re spending Thanksgiving with family, picture the bathroom where you’ll be staying. Will there be a place to set your denture case? Will you be sharing a sink with several people getting ready for bed? Thinking through that part of the trip makes it easier to pack what you actually use, especially if this is your first overnight visit with a removable denture.

What belongs in your travel kit?

Start with the supplies you reach for at home. Pack a soft denture brush, the cleanser recommended for your denture, a labeled case with a lid, and a small washcloth. Bring your regular toothbrush as well. If you wear a partial denture, pack the supplies you use to clean your natural teeth and between them.

Keep the cleanser in its original packaging so you can read the directions away from home. If your partial has metal clasps, check that the product is suitable for your appliance. A quick photo of the package can help if you need to find the same product during your trip.

How do you clean a denture in an unfamiliar bathroom?

Set your open case within reach and lay the folded washcloth in the sink. A wet denture can slip, and the towel cushions the drop onto a hard basin. Rinse off loose food, then gently brush the denture every day with a soft brush and a nonabrasive denture cleanser. Give the surface that rests against your gums the same attention you give the visible teeth.

Follow the cleanser label for soaking time, then rinse the denture thoroughly before putting it back in your mouth. Use cool or lukewarm water. Hot water can warp a denture and change how it fits.

Where should you keep it overnight?

Follow the overnight instructions your dentist gave you. When you remove a denture, keeping it moist helps it hold its shape. Depending on the appliance, your dentist may recommend plain water or a suitable soaking solution. Set the closed case somewhere you’ll remember in the morning. A consistent spot also saves a search when everyone is packing up to leave.

When is it worth a visit before you travel?

Pay attention during an ordinary meal at home. Does your partial lift on one side when you chew? Does the same area feel sore after lunch each day? Mention those details when you call. If you’ve started using more adhesive to get through a meal, ask your dentist to check the fit.

Bring the denture to your appointment so we can look at both the appliance and the area that bothers you. Learn about our removable dentistry and denture services, or request an appointment with Advanced Dentistry of Mount Pleasant.
